LET'S TALK ABOUT THE APOCALYPS - LING MAGAZINE

The Apocalyps is near. The world is in its last days and Jehovah, as we call God, is giving out his final warnings to live well. Wars, earthquakes, food shortages and deceases; the bible has been speaking about this time ages ago. Timothy 3:1-5: Know that in the last days critical times hard to deal with will be here. For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, self-assuming, disobedient to parents, having no natural affection, lovers of pleasures rather than lovers of God…

Only you have to switch on your television to you know that the bible is right. Morality is declining. The development of nuclear weapons and the serial murders by youngsters - like the most recent killings in Germany- are only examples of the evil that is alive in the world today. Developments are speeding up. Catastrophes, like the Tsunami, have become more severe. And unlike in the past, nowadays the whole world is involved.

It all started with the deception of Adam and Eve. As almost everyone knows, God created a Paradise for Adam and Eve. They could eat from all the trees, besides one. But Satan, in the appearance of a snake, invited them to eat exactly the fruit from that forbidden tree. This was the first time that Satan deceived the human race and he has kept the world into his powers ever since.

The real meaning of this planet, however, is everlasting peace and happiness -and if Adam and Eve wouldn’t have lived in sin, this would still have been the case. To make this change happen the world will have to come to its end. When, only God knows, but it is certain that this day will come as a thief in the night. A new Paradise will be created and only those who take notice of Jehovah -the only true God- will survive and live for eternity.

We neither know exactly what will happen when the last day has broken. A big force will master us. It will not be fun and people who didn’t live well will die. Still, the Paradise will be longing for the people who have welcomed Jehovah in their lives. Think about the white sandy beaches and crystal blue waters in Thailand, those will be equally shared for all. We will be freed from the imperfectness of human kind. There will be no more pain, nor grief or sorrow. The disabled will stand up. The blind will see and we will live forever. I can only hope to experience that day during my lifetime; to hear the voice of Jehovah say: “Today is the day.”

ROBERTO RICHARD (42) was born a Jehovah Witnesses. His daily job is to be a stylist. Roberto prefers to spend time on spiritual development, rather than developments required by society. He lives with his wife and daughter in Amsterdam, where he preaches the word of God as part of his religion.

LOCATION SPOTTING AMSTERDAM - OESTERS VAN NAM KEE - LING MAGAZINE

2002. Director: Pollo de Pimentel. Starring: Egbert-Jan Weeber, Katja Schuurman. Based on the book by Kees van Beijnum

Oysters from Nam Kee is a story about a boy called Berry, who lives in a villa quarter hidden in slum Slotermeer. Although he’s attending the prestigious Barlaeus Gynasium, he prefers to hang around the hood. When he meets Thera his world turns upside down. Like Berry, Thera grew up in a good family but somehow she ended up dancing in a sex club. When their love, consumed with oysters of Chinese restaurant Nam Kee on the Zeedijk, reaches its climax Thera suddenly disappears out of Berry’s life.

Most locations in the film are inspired by the book. “That wasn’t easy”, explains location scout Hans van den Berg. “Both Oesters van Nam Kee and Hilton Amsterdam were afraid to harm their reputation. The biggest challenge, however, was to create a natural flow between Amsterdam ‘s city centre and the suburbs -as Berry goes back and forth between his house, the Nieuwmarkt district, his local pub and the Hilton.”

“The pub, on the August Allebeplein”, explains Hans “was located in a suburb that generated a lot of publicity when a policeman killed a 22-year old in a shooting. To prevent problems on the shoot, youngsters from the area were asked to help on the set. In the Hilton on the other hand, Berry and Thera stayed in the John Lennon and Yoko Ono Honeymoon Suite, the same room as where the Beatle and his newly wedded wife stayed in bed for one week in 1969, protesting against the Vietnam War.“

“For Thera’s ex -boyfriend, a German nude photographer, we needed to find a house that suited his cold personality. The Light Factory, an old factory turned luxury apartments, did the job. The most difficult location however, was Thera’s apartment. It took us a while before we found the attic on the Da Costakade that provided a view over the city for Berry ‘and Thera’s lovemaking scene. “At lonely height, you and me” as Thera described their romance.”

HANS VAN DEN BERG started working as a location scout after finishing art school. He did the scouting for Dutch productions like Nynke, de Jurk and Oorlogswinter. Today, he’s working on ‘Kind en Kleur’, a series of youth programs for national television.

THE WORLD'S TOP 25 MOST LIVEABLE CITIES 2009 - MONOCLE

Monocle's researchers have spent the past months putting the world's leading cities to the test to find the best places for you to make your base. Who's improved, who's slipped and who's dropped out of our global ranking of the places that have it sorted.

Number 21 Amsterdam

Amsterdam is green-thinking but may be a bit too relaxed. To quote Mick Jagger: "Amsterdam is the world's smallest metropolis." Everything is within cycling distance , and the city is characterised by its cosmopolitan vibe.

A green wind has been blowing through the streets of Amsterdam. One hundred per cent of household waste is recycled to produce electricity for the city's transport system. And new housing is being created on reclaimed land in the IJsselmeer, which has put Amsterdam back on the architectural map.

The downsides are a lack of paring for residents, which should be solved by underground facilities, and there aren't enough secure bicycle bays. Completion of Line 52, the north-south metro line, would get things moving.

AMSTERDAM STYLE GUIDE - MONOCLE

Home to 17th-century canals, legendary architecture and picturesque windmills, Amsterdam is one of the few capitals in the world that still cherishes a village vibe. Its creative spread is as alive today as it was in the days of Rembrandt, Breitner or Mondrian. And although the city is known as a liberalminded paradise, you would miss out on the real Amsterdam if you were just to settle for that image.

50 THINGS TO IMPROVE YOUR LIFE - MONOCLE

Number 20. An urban market

Marqt is a new-style marketplace in Amsterdam that offers a tasty and pleasant alternative to your daily grocery shopping. After the invasion of the supermarket chains, where quality and taste often suffer from severe price competitions, Marqt returns to the original function of a market, where local farmers and buyers gather without the interference of a middleman. The “q” stands for quality and assures you a wholesome choice as this organic shopping paradise only offers pure, fresh and nutritious food products directly from the source. The farmers sell their fruit, veggies, meat and fish themselves, providing the best methods of preparation and ensuring that no artificial ingredients have been added. Besides its goodies, the interior of this stylish indoor market is also designed with natural materials. The foods are displayed in wooden boxes and written up on chalkboards. In the middle of the shop a stainless steel cooking island prepare small bites, like soups and crostinis. What a pleasure to overwhelm yourself in this groovy grocery store. No need to worry about picking the wrong checkout line because there is only one, leading you to several cash desks. And with this morning’s yield in your basket you need not bother about coins or banknotes either, as payment can only be made with plastic.
